DNV GL certificate for Stauff Connect

New connection system with marine and offshore approvals

The international certification body and ship classification society DNV GL Group has tested a large part of the Stauff Connect range of metric tube connectors, which Stauff first presented at the Hannover Messe 2015, and approved these for maximum operating pressures up to 800 bar. The approval applies not only for operation with hydraulic oil and lubricating oil, but also with heavy oil, compressed air, oxygen, steam, freshwater and seawater.

Stauff Connect was developed for the leak-free connection of metric tubes with diameters between 4 and 42 mm. The complete range includes 24° cutting ring connectors, DKO connectors with 24° sealing cone and O-ring as well as 24° welding cones and 37° flare fittings. The product range is completed by check and shuttle valves, threaded reducers, blanking components as well as assembly tools and devices. DNV GL approved the connectors with 24° cutting ring, with 24° sealing cone and O-ring as well as 24° welding cones.

Among other things, the DNV GL testers carried out tests for leaks, bursting pressure and reverse bending pressure impulse and also tested the Stauff Connect system components in a vacuum and under strong vibrations. The certificate documents that these tests were passed successfully.

Stauff Connect is ideal for use in maritime applications because it offers corrosion protection that goes beyond previous market standards thanks to the high-quality zinc/nickel coating. Over 1,200 hours resistance to red rust and base metal corrosion were achieved in the salt spray test in line with EN ISO 9227. This clearly exceeds the highest corrosion protection class K5 as defined by the VDMA in standards sheet 24576.

For users in the shipping and offshore industry, this type of corrosion protection also offers the advantage of remaining effective even after possible mechanical damage to the fitting, which can never be excluded in the rough shipping and port environment. If the surface is damaged, only the top layers of sealing and passivation might be removed, but not the zinc/nickel layer underneath which provides the actual corrosion protection. The coating is also highly ductile which makes it less susceptible to damage. 

In addition to the DNV GL certification, the Stauff Connect range also obtained approval from the “Russian Maritime Register of Shipping”. This means the range has achieved two important certifications for using the connecting system in shipbuilding and offshore technology within a short period of time.
